How to Find a Business Mentor?

When looking for a mentor, it’s important to consider what you hope to gain from the relationship and what you can offer in return. It can also be helpful to clearly understand your goals and what you want to achieve through the mentorship.

The right business mentor will help you nurture the skills you need to achieve your goals in a short space of time. Finding a person you admire and trust as a business mentor might be an essential first step. You will be surprised at how many famous entrepreneurs would be keen to mentor you when you match with the right person.

Approach People

Talk to business leaders you admire, not necessarily in your industry. Nowadays, it’s easier than ever to reach out to people on social media and ask for advice, so don’t let your shyness hold you back. When DM’ing people, clearly outline why you think they can be a suitable mentor and what are your goals should they accept to work with you.

Be strategic & Patient

Do your homework before reaching out to people. Someone not knowledgeable about the industry you’re stepping into or a potential direct competitor won’t be the perfect fit for you. Don’t be disheartened if your dream mentor never responds. Try personalising your message. For instance, outline why them, why you, what they can help you with etc. Consider attending an event they are speaking at and engage with them.

Attend events

Network with people in your industry or related fields. You can join professional organisations, attend industry events, and participate in online forums or groups related to your expertise. This can help you meet potential mentors who are knowledgeable about the industry and can provide valuable guidance and advice. Also, look for a mentor through a mentorship program or organisation. There are many organisations and programs that match mentors with mentees in various fields.

Network Elsewhere

I enjoy attending networking events outside my field, which is quite stimulating. For instance, consider attending tech events if you work in the construction industry. Meeting people with different mindsets can open the door to exciting opportunities. You could ‘export’ and ‘import’ the insights into your field of expertise and impress everyone around you. Give it a go – it works like magic!
